Foundation
Mukuba Pension Trust was established in 1982 by the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Investment Holdings (ZCCM-IH) and the Mine Workers' Union of Zambia (MUZ). Created to provide retirement security for mining sector workers, Mukuba became Zambia's first major occupational pension scheme.
The fund took its name from mukuba — the Bemba word for copper — a fitting tribute to the industry it was created to serve and to the region of Zambia's Copperbelt where its members work and live.
Growth and consolidation
Through the 1980s and 1990s, Mukuba grew alongside Zambia's mining sector, expanding its membership and developing the administrative infrastructure needed to serve a large, geographically dispersed workforce. The fund maintained its Defined Benefit structure throughout this period, providing reliable income promises to its members.
Regulatory reform and expansion
The enactment of the Pension Scheme Regulation Act strengthened the regulatory environment for Zambian pension funds. Mukuba embraced these reforms, ensuring full compliance with Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA) requirements and introducing enhanced governance structures.
The Trust also introduced a Defined Contribution section during this period, broadening the range of retirement savings options available to members and employers.
Modernisation and restructuring
Mukuba undertook a significant modernisation programme to strengthen the fund's governance, improve member communication, and ensure the long-term sustainability of its Defined Benefit obligations. The restructuring project, conducted in partnership with international pension consultants, positioned the fund for the next generation of member service.
Serving members into the future
Mukuba Pension Trust continues to serve members across the Copperbelt and beyond. Regulated by the PIA, governed by an independent Board of Trustees, and administered by a professional management team, the Trust remains committed to its founding promise: a secure, dignified retirement for every member.
